821 Slip Sliding Away

Okay, posting a little early cos I got BIG news and BIGGER news!

The big news is I've finished with the scripts for the rest of the road trip story (all 30 of them). Lots of great stuff I can't wait to complete with storylines I'm sure everyone will like -and a few plot twist. Hard to believe this road trip chapter (almost 150 comics when finished) only take place over one week in time.     But the BIGGER news is....the wait if finally over. As you can probably guess, I'm launching my first Kickstarter for my first Bohemian Nights graphic novel! The book is a slick compilation tome of the first chapter of the series. Book One: The Nights we Felt Alive compiles the first 168 strips into a nice cohesive book. -Something I've been wanting to do for a long time and now feel confident to venture through Kickstarter to do it. In fact, I'd like to see if I can print a book a year and get the whole series out there in physical form. I had two concerns. One is the fact that anyone that comes to this website on a regular basis has more than likely already read these pages. So I asked myself what can I offer them in this book that they have not already seen? Well, in addition to adding some bonus illustrations I'll be including some of the comics that were only available through Patreon. -At least the ones that are relevant to the book I'll be putting out. For this first book, I'll be including the five page 'gender altering' What If? story where I took a look at the night everyone first met but switched their character's gender around. In addition, and I think the best part of the book, I have filled the pages with margin notes. Quick, interesting fun facts placed here, there and everywhere throughout the book with behind the scenes comments ranging from how or why I created that particular strip, to hidden shout outs in the illustrations, to character development notes and plot foreshadowing. It's basically like watching a movie with a cast and crew commentary on. You can read the comic as is or you can read it with the commentary.   The other thing that concerned me was the quality of artwork on these early strips. -Especially this first book. I didn't want to redo every comic in this book. I felt that would be an egregious act on what my art style was when I first started the web comic, but there were some very glaring flaws in a few of the illustrations that I just couldn't ignore. So for this book, I have gone over maybe about ten present of the comics and fixed some of the worst offenders. Most of them had to do with figure proportion or shape -as you can see in the example below. What I didn't do was change the art style. I still wanted to keep everything the way it was back then, which was a bit more cartoon or humorous type of illustration than how I'm drawing the comic today. I just wanted to fix a few of the problems that struck me wrong. Think of the book as a "Remastered Edition". So there you have it! That's the first book! Of course with Kickstarter there are also lots of rewards depending on your pledge level. Those will include things like your name printed on the Thank You page of the book for anyone who pledges any amount, A PDF version of the book, A double sided bookmark with brand new illustrations of Shannon and Mark (I chose them cos they really were the most prominent in this first book). There's also refrigerator magnets of some of the characters. At higher pledge levels I'll have signed copied made out to you personally, and even a one of a kind character sketch inside the book on the front blank page (your choice of character). At the highest levels you can get the book as a Limited Edition Hardcover available only through Kickstarter. And if...just if I surpass my goal amount and reach my stretch goal, I will include a brand new, never before seen extra 5-7 pages of the Bohemian Nights characters as they were in the story back then. Think of it as a cut scene. I'm thinking Emrys and Beth on this too. (And maybe expanding McKrakkin's acid trip as well). So there it is. It can all be found HERE! Check it out. And yes, I'll be shipping world wide! (Although there will be additional international shipping charges) I got to admit. I'm a little bit nervous. There are a lot of things that can go wrong. I hope all goes well with printing and I hope I calculated everything correctly. But with that said, I hope you support the project and enjoy all the extras I have for it. I'm really looking forward to printing the whole series.

  1. Ya blew it, Emrys.

Also, I’m in the kickstarter as soon as I find where I left my wallet.

      Thanks man. I appreciate it.
-And don’t count out Emrys quite yet…

      1. Indeed, especially given the way the lovely and talented Beth is brushing off her dance date. I dub Emrys the comic’s Eeyore!

  2. Even doing nothing can end up as fucked up.

      Unfortunately, that is very true.

  3. As I said before, Emrys should’ve just left after his second drink. Would’ve played it safe and maybe he wouldn’t seem so pathetic to Beth. Even if they do hook up I’m betting Emrys will start feeling that it’s out of pity.

As for Beth… I hope Big Sister Shannon takes Beth aside and reminds her that she is thiiiiiiis close to falling back into her old habit of sleeping with her exes the moment she and Emrys seem to take a step forward in their relationship, and she has to figure out if 15 minutes to an hour of good sex with a guy she’ll most likely never see is worth losing the friend who’s been in love with her since he saw her. And with Stephanie seemingly having an epiphany and moping around back home, she no doubt will make an appealing consolation girlfriend for Emrys (though I think right now Stephanie needs FRIENDS, not a BOYFRIEND.)

That being said I also really hope Emrys doesn’t make the situation worse and call Beth a slut or something which would make the drive home really awkward. It basically would have just prolonged how I thought the Rich arc was going to end.

    1. Nice analysis and commentary! I agree with everything with one caveat, I didn’t read Beth’s reaction to Emrys’ blunder as him being pathetic, but more of a “that was a silly thing to do, my friend”. Admittedly my reaction to her is heavily based on how her conversation went with his mother, but if anything, I think that even if Beth isn’t thinking of him romantically, she is taking him seriously as a friend and trying to look out for his well being. A lot of the best couples with long lasting relationships start out that way, so I could see it happening here too, particularly with Emrys’ self-confidence issues and Beth’s need to break old patterns.

I think the future looks positive for the both of them, one way or another, though I’m also still firmly in the camp of them becoming a happy couple. Time will tell…or rather Eric will show. πŸ˜‰

Your take on the situation is correct. πŸ˜‰

You’re pretty spot on here. (except I don’t think Emrys would ever call Beth a slut even if he was angry with her.)

  4. Congrats Eric! I’m glad to hear the good news. Re Emrys, he’s obviously having a bad night. I hope he can laugh it off. This might show Beth he’s not too full of himself,

      Thank you.
The story should finish soon. -it should be good.

  5. Congratulations on the Kickstarter, Eric! I’ll be checking that out as soon as possible. πŸ™‚

    1. Pledge entered. πŸ™‚

Thank you all. I’m hoping the Kickstarter actually comes through. Fingers crossed.

    1. I am going to end my WoW subscription, so I’ll go for highest pledge.

      1. bohemiannightsthecomic

        Wow! (pun intended)
I was playing WoW for many years. Had to stop for a while so I could produce the comic. So I know what kind of sacrifice that entails. Thank you.

        1. Nah. I just returned to Classic when covid striked. When I returned to work, I played less and less. I haven’t played WoW in last half of year. And when Blizz wanted me to pay for Burning Crusade once again, I decided to stop subscription. So no sacrifice. Just rationalization πŸ™‚
