So some of you out there may be thinking to yourself "Gee, this is going better than expected."
True. But I don't think there are very many people reading this that thought that Emrys would actually leave. -least of all me. I always felt that Emrys helping out his mom move was really only used as a vehicle to get everyone together on a road trip. And now that they got all the way down there I realized that I needed to address this part of the story and be done with it. I hope this portion wasn't too anti-climactic. (although there's two more strips before we leave Geraldine.)
There is more road trip stories to come...

Ohhhh, Geraldine, you decoy-Big Bad. I really thought there’d be some dramatic showdown between her and Beth and the others, with Emrys finally standing up to her, since he’s been a wet blanket around her this whole arc. But, nope, the lady genuinely loves Emrys and wants what’s best for him, and all she needed was a casual conversation with Beth to open her eyes to that.
Of course I knew Emrys would come back to Portland. The way you teased Stephanie and her massive freakout/epiphany, we KNEW Geraldine wouldn’t win and Stephanie would come back into Emrys’s life. In what context I don’t know, but hopefully Emrys won’t fall for her charms if she wants him back.

The best webcomics are when the characters surprise the author. I, too, was expecting Emrys to stay with his mother, Beth coming back down trying to rescue Emrys, Emrys eventually returning to Portland to find out that Beth had moved on. Then an entirely different story arc centered around another character pair.

Ah, the list of chores that you get whenever you visit an aging parent.
Now all there needs to be is Emrys worried about Geraldine’s health and for her to wave it off as no big deal.
Also, bottom right panel, should probably be ‘never thought I’d hear you say something like that’ not ‘never thought I’d hear so say something like that’

I think it’s less we’re shocked at how it turned out, and more that we didn’t see yet how you would make it happen. It’s all very organic, and that’s in its favor. People are being human, up and down the line. But that’s always been a strength of your comic.

Here is our deal story man. You write your story and I will read it, and sometimes laugh, and sometimes be angry, and sometimes be sad. It is a functioning relationship. Cheers. Thanks for keep bringing me the story.

Nah, not anticlimactic. I like it when people surprise me. Well, sometimes anyway π

Iβd recommend that Emrys ask his Mom to write down a to-do list for him. Then there wonβt be any hard feelings later. I am glad Emrys will not leave his friends. It would have damaged the theme of BN too much, IMHO. π

Ah! It’s not as I’d expected (I expect very little by now) but overall it’s as I’d hoped. Now I’m ready for heaps of road trip music!

YES!! Same here!

I love her cynicism in Panel Two – chase your dreams while you’re still idealistic enough to pretend you can win.

Thank you. Yeah, she is the queen of back-handed encouragement.

Everyone was painting Geraldine as the villain of this arc, but I’m glad to see that she too, as is common in life, is just as human as the rest of us. π Were she truly a wicked, evil mother then I think Emrys would have let her go, even with his good nature, so this revelation is really more of a boost to both characters and how we perceive them. It’s a rare thing to have a real villain, like good ‘ol Rich was, most people are multi-faceted and we often only know one, two or maybe five facets. This is why relationships, the good ones anyway, take time, something all of us take for granted at some point in our hectic lives.
Thank you for, once again, showing us that your characters are real people and not just a caricature, Eric. π

Little bit of everyone’s mom in this lady. Well done.
