Lying is a topic I find very interesting. None of the Ten Commandments says “Thou shalt not lie.” There is one that says “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.” Now is a lover a kind of “neighbor”? I believe one is. So Devon did do something wrong, but I don’t believe it’s an unpardonable betrayal. I think she really needs to try dating other women.
Devon being in her first full on Lesbian relationship is dealing with the fact that she didn’t see herself as that attractive a woman (probably) and when a young lady suddenly sidles up to her and makes that interest known… Well, she was indeed smitten. Perhaps not so much by the single girl, but more by the concept that other women do find her attractive. This makes her suddenly feel… Well, empowered and desired and all those wonderful feelings and that’s something I think she felt she was lacking. Despite the fact that a very beautiful woman is head over heels for her (or at least was)… Yes, it will take time to build back that relationship and even more so, if Devon decides she wants to ‘play the field’ a bit. A lot of women seeking women do this, when they realize they are desirable, even if it poisons something they already have, I think it’s a human failure sometimes to go looking for the ‘BBD’ the classic “Bigger Better Deal”… Even if there isn’t one.
on the other hand, though, some people take a real hit to their self confidence when they come out to (hardest of all!) themselves. they have to process the realization that their understanding of themselves is changing, and what, besides their sexual identities, might change? and if they are living in a time and place where vocal segments of society are saying their very existence is an affront, as Devon’s parents apparently do, it can cause self-respect problems even to someone aware that those people are wrong. this low self-respect can incline a woman (in this case) to under-value herself and be vulnerable to the same kinds of behavior encouraged by what’s currently called toxic masculinity. it’s less a feeling of empowerment and more a feeling of powerlessness.

I can’t help but feel like this was somehow inspired by Pixie Trix Comix and how main character Zadie rationalized cheating on her wrestler girlfriend Roxie. Zadie was sent on assignment to interview Roxie’s archrival, a wrestler named Gwynn, and Gwynn took a liking to her and flirted throughout their interview. Like Devon, Zadie resisted at first, but ultimately succumbed to Gwynn’s charms and kissed her… then immediately regretted it and confessed to Roxie. Zadie’s thought process is almost identical to Devon’s; being wanted by more than one woman made her feel beautiful and she craved the attention, but in PTC case, Roxie, hearing what Zadie had to say, still dumped Zadie since it was clear Zadie wanted polyamory and Roxie was a one-woman woman. It should be pointed out that Gwynn is polyamorous, having both a boyfriend and girlfriend at the same time, but she’s borderline cheating on both by promising them that they’re all she’ll ever need and she ended up making out with a post-breakup Zadie because Zadie wore a superhero costume that made Gwynn hot and bothered. I think a big difference between Devon and Zadie is that Devon KNOWS she screwed up and is trying to make amends, but Zadie, despite calling herself a literal Jezebel, is still falling into the same pattern, most recently throwing herself at ANOTHER lady wrestler who had a crush on her… who just happens to have been on a date with ZADIE’S ROOMMATE!
I am a HUGE fan of Gisele’s. I was reading Menage a 3 every day back in the days before I started my own comic and beyond. But I must confess, I haven’t kept up with Pixie Trix since it started. I know I really should. But in this case, I think it’s actually just a coincidence. -Just two creative types writing essentially about the same subject matter (for Devon and Annabel anyway) It does sound very similar. I think, had I been reading her comic, I wouldn’t have done this story at all. So I guess it’s just one of those serendipitous sparks of communal creativity.
@Corey C, yeah, I read Pixie Trix Comix too. Sometimes when someone tries to fix something, including a relationship, one just makes it even worse, if one goes about it the wrong way. Even if one has a heart of gold. That’s why it’s important to ask for help from anyone who is caring and trustworthy.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Once again you’ve illustrated perfectly what I was trying to convey. That’s exactly what’s going on with Devon.

Very interesting. I can see Devon with some of those low self-respect problems as well. You bring up some very good points.
