And somehow I can relate to Emrys. When I was nearly 25, I just left mental hospital after unsuccesful suicide attempt. Found there a girlfriend. With some issues (debts, autistic son in puberty, her constant living in dreams). Weยดve been together for 6 years. Then I run out of monies. Now I am back with my parents for 2 years. With no life job of truck driver. (250 hours at work as standard). Depressed again. Trying to rot alive. So yeah. That thinking “My life is one huge EPIC FAIL” is really current for me.
I am sorry for bothering you with this shit post ๐
Gorbi, I don’t know you except from what you share in your posts, but even from that I can tell that your life is not a failure, epic or otherwise. Life is in no way easy or fair, and some people have more challenges than others. What you need to remember is that so long as you are trying to live, even attempting to support yourself by being employed and earning a paycheck, you are not failing anything. You may be struggling now, but just keep trying and life will continue to improve, bit by bit, even if you don’t notice it at first. The important thing to remember is that you will always have the opportunity to learn from mistakes in your life, and not repeating them is how we learn.
It’s a fallacy of modern society that you have to be a rock star, genius scientist or captain of industry to have a “successful” life. Living is more than just money, power or fame, it’s about what you do with the talents and skills you have and how you treat yourself and others along the way. Learn how to be YOU by examining your choices, needs and desires, then distill what’s most important to you and focus on meeting your needs and finding ways to make yourself happy that are achievable. There’s nothing wrong with having dreams and trying to fulfill them, but there’s also nothing wrong with getting by, day to day, until you can realize them. Take each day as it comes and do the best you can manage that day. Break bigger challenges down into smaller steps so they are easier to deal with, then reflect on your achievement as you clear each hurdle and realize that you ARE capable of doing what you need to do, it just takes time and effort.
As the saying goes, “your mileage may vary”, but this advice is something I’ve been working with all my life to some degree or another, and some days it works for me and other days I fail miserably, but I keep trying. I’ve been “getting by” day to day for several years now, but it keeps me employed so I can pay my bills and helps me stay sane in a world filled with uncertainty. Whatever you do, don’t give up, because your self worth is not something YOU decide, only discover as you live your life.
On the topic of suicide, there’s a TV show called “The Blacklist” that had a scene that summed it up very well for me, and I think everyone can gather some meaning from it:
Raymond ‘Red’ Reddington : Have you ever seen the aftermath of a suicide bombing?
Mysterious Woman : We’re wasting time.
Raymond ‘Red’ Reddington : I have. June 29th, 2003. I was meeting two associates at the Marouche restaurant in Tel Aviv. As my car was pulling up, a 20-year-old Palestinian named Ghazi Safar entered the restaurant and detonated a vest wired with C-4
Mysterious Woman : Let me go.
Raymond ‘Red’ Reddington : The shock wave knocked me flat, blew out my eardrums. I couldn’t hear. The smoke… It was like being under water. I went inside. A nightmare. Blood, parts of people. You could tell where Safar was standing when the vest blew. It was like a perfect circle of death. There was almost nothing left of the people closest to him. Seventeen dead, 46 injured. Blown to pieces. The closer they were to the bomber, the more horrific the effect.
Mysterious Woman : Stop.
Raymond ‘Red’ Reddington : That’s every suicide. Every single one. An act of terror perpetrated against everyone who’s ever known you. Everyone who’s ever loved you. The people closest to you, the ones who cherish you are the ones who suffer the most pain, the most damage. Why would you do that? Why would you do that to people who love you?
It’s a graphic example, but I think it puts an important perspective into your mind and helps you realize just how interconnected we all are, even if we don’t realize it. If you’re still depressed, please, tell someone you care about and trust and find the help you need. Suicide leaves a crater in the lives of everyone it impacts: your loved ones, friends, associates, those who respond to the call that you’ve died, even strangers who don’t know you, but feel sad when someone takes their own life. The quote, “No man is an island”, is not generally used in this context, but I think it extrapolates well to disprove the notion that anyone is ever truly “alone” in life. Even if you just chat with the grocery store clerk, or gas station attendant, or next door neighbor, you have a place in the fabric of humanity and have value. Your life may have troubles, maybe more than you deserve, but always remember that so long as their is life, there is hope, and that’s something worth holding onto in your darkest moments. Life can change, WILL change, all we have to do is keep trying our best to keep going and make it a good one for ourselves and others.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Jeff is the friend everyone needs, even if he can embarrass you sometimes. Or maybe I should because he can embarrass you sometimes? Anyhow, Jeff is great and really helps keep you grounded. ๐
As far as I’ve seen, Beth always mentioned Emrys as her “good buddy.” To my knowledge she hasn’t told ANYONE that she’s starting to see him as more than a friend. Unless Jeff could put two and two together when Beth seemed… less than thrilled… about Stephanie becoming Emrys’s girlfriend.
