#646 Flirting

Who would have thought some characters would cause so much reaction. Yes! Rich is an ass! And a creep. And untrustworthy.  That’s how he’s written. He’s not here to be liked. Yes, Stephanie is manipulative. And extremely annoying at times. That’s how she’s written.  She has many flaws. These characters are antagonists to the comic. Especially for this latest chapter (Book 5). The focus is really on these two and how they interact with the regular cast of characters and not necessarily in a good way. With Rich, the reader is already privy to some bad intentions on his part that the other characters in the comic are not. I totally get the backlash on this character. As a writer, that’s exactly the response I was intending. In many ways, he’s a villain. (oh, and it might get worse). With Stephanie, keep in mind, most of us have been in a bad relationship, some of us more than once. And some of us held onto these bad relationships far longer than we should have. That’s what I’m attempting to show here. It can be kind of cringey to read especially when your only getting a comic twice a week and the storyline  may take months to tell, but there are satisfying resolutions on the horizon. It just may take a while. This chapter is turning out to be a bit longer than others. (Most have been 150 comics long. This one is looking like 200.) I do enjoy your comments. I really do. I love that some of you have a visceral reaction to these extremely flawed characters and their actions. So as a writer, I know I’ve done my job. So I get how most of you don’t like these characters. I wouldn’t like them in real life myself. But alas, this is a comic mostly about relationships and right now I’m diving into the hurtful side of some of them.  But take heart. It won’t remain this way. And I have a feeling by the end of this chapter most of you will enjoy the conclusions. –Just keep in mind that the chapter’s end may not arrive until late next year. I will, however, have some other lighter storylines to offset the Stephanie and Rich ones. (Devon and Annabel / Mateo and Mia) So hopefully that will help most of you reading this comic not to give up on it all together.

Quick Programming Note:

I should have the next Patreon Midnight Edition up by next fourth of July weekend with a special double sized comic. I'll also post the finished book cover too and will be returning to the Greenman story in August. -Thanks for letting me catch up with that project. Finally I'll also be sending out original drawings to the 10$ and plus Patreons  in July as well.

  1. Just so you know, I think your writing is great. I kind of figured Rich was meant to be a villan and noticed Steph’s tendency to manipulate. I always look forward to your next episode and It is worth waiting for

  2. Honestly, I love the fact that Steph wasn’t neccessarily villianous… at first. But after a time she starts to shorten the leash and has some unrealistic expectations for Emrys (the newest comic above being a glaring example. Jebus Steph ease up!)

  3. I think your writing is great, and if everybody was happy and perfect we would get bored pretty quick, its always a plus to have characters we love to hate keeps things interesting

  4. Hey! So I found a link to BN a couple of weeks ago. I liked what I was reading and binged through over about 10-14 days. I really like the long term development of the story, and I really enjoy how your art has improved as the years passed! The NSFW aspects are very well done and I look forward to more 🙂 Mark’s story was sad and tragic… I’m looking forward to seeing how his friends cope with his death long term. Sometimes a loss of that irreparably tears a group apart and sometimes it brings them closer together… Will Emrys put up with Stephanie’s manipulation much longer? I’ll bet he catches her in bed with an old boyfriend, doesn’t he? Doesn’t he?? LOL I really am enjoying this story, even if I’m a looong way away from my 20s!

Welcome aboard and thanks for writing in. I’m very glad to hear you enjoy the comic.
As for Steph…well….you’ll just have to wait and see…

  5. Well, punk rock explains her hairstyle, and more of her personality to some degree. Stephanie, you’ve now been labeled as a rebellious teenager at heart with trust issues and a side order of cluelessness. Prove me wrong. 😉

Regarding the author’s comments, I appreciate what you’re doing with the story, Eric, and I am glad that you are still going strong despite life slapping you around like a ping pong ball the past year or two. Persistence in the face of obstacles is the mark of a dedicated storyteller and it’s something that I appreciate most when it comes to web comics, because chances are, if I ever make a comment, I’m invested in the characters and story to some degree or another.

It’s true that I am fairly vocal in my dislike for Rich, but as others have already said, I knew that he was an antagonist from page one (anyone that Beth decks at first sight *earned* it), so while I’m going to continue to complain about him, know that I am thinking ahead to his eventual comeuppance and getting satisfaction from it (after all, bad guys *always* get their comeuppance – Evelyn said so and she’s a librarian). Stephanie, on the other hand, has some redeeming qualities, so I’m hoping she either struggles more successfully against her flaws, or takes her leave in the future. Either way, she’s a very realistic character. 🙂

  6. I can’t’t really say it any better than Thracecius already has. But just to say it a different way:
I hate Rich – and I’m on the fence about Stephanie – but I love Bohemian Nights. It’s a great story, and I always look forward to seeing where it goes!

    Thank you all.
I was just putting it out there. I figured most of you already knew what I wrote above and were okay with it. But thanks for writing in.

  8. Nobody says “please” while flirting. I mean, really! 😉

  9. it’s fun to read, but it does make me squirm a little, Stephanie’s resemblance to the last girl i dated before i met my wife is just too “on the nose”
