I know. There's been an awful lot of sadness in the comic. It read better as one big chunk when I wrote it, but now having it posting a comic here...a comic there...well...it's a bit of a downer. I get it. I'm sorry. All I can say is it will get better. Sometimes the fastest way out of a bad situation is to dive right through it. Hang in there.
Also...the rumors are true. I won't be doing any more conventions after this year. Well, none next year anyway, and maybe for the year after that as well. So your last chance to see me is coming up in November. Nov. 3-4 in Tacoma WA for Jet City comic con and Nov 10-11 in Eugene OR for Eucon. Let's blow this out properly!

Steph looks … distant, like she left mentally some time ago.
And I can’t help thinking that Mark’s three original non-Mateo friends are the ones left.

You’re right, on both counts.
Of the group now, the oldest friends, the ones that have known each other since before High School are/were Mateo, Mark, Beth, Shannon, Dave and Jeff.

I couldn’t agree more, but I am also reminded of a wonderful little poem by a man named Longfellow:
The day is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
The vine still clings to the mouldering wall,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall,
And the day is dark and dreary.
My life is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
My thoughts still cling to the mouldering Past,
But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,
And the days are dark and dreary.
Be still, sad heart! and cease repining;
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;
Thy fate is the common fate of all,
Into each life some rain must fall,
Some days must be dark and dreary.
The sun will shine again, but until then, do like us Washingtonians do for 7-8 months a year – remember that the sun will return and be all the more glorious for its absence. 🙂

What a beautiful poem. And it fits into the story (and my life these days as well). Thank you for sharing that. (I may have to use Mr. Longfellow’s poem in the comic at a later date.)
