#980 Cats in the Cradle

Okay, so I have a question for all of you, but especially those who have backed the previous Kickstarter for the Bohemian Nights books.

I'm working on getting the third book ready for print but I'm now entering a point where the content will be much more graphic. I'm not necessarily talking about scenes like above where people might be naked for obvious reasons, but more like in showing the stronger, more graphic parts. -Namely... should I include the adult themed 'Midnight Edition' comics that have been showing in the Patreon rewards, or should I dismiss them?

This is kind of a hard decision. On one hand, the Midnight Edition comics are...well...basically porn even if they do use the characters here, and may be a little too strong for some readers including those new to the comic. They also don't further the story along either.

On the other hand, they are still canon to the story. The events that happen in them are not fantasy but actual occurrences that happen to the characters. And while they don't necessarily further the storyline, they can be integral to shedding some light on the characters themselves.

I've never been one to shy away from sex in the comic. Bohemian Nights is not a 'sex comic', but it does have sex it. This has always been because as a comic about people in their twenties, it's very hard not to show something as strong as what sex brings to someone of that age. It's when most people have the most partners and try many different things. It is both liberating and confusing, and I feel it would be hard to make this comic devoid of it.

Still, that said, how much do I want to show? That was the original reason to push the more graphic stuff to the Patron Only comic. But there are some out there who are not Patrons and who have never seen the comics and the books may be a good place to showcase them. Others may find that the comics take away from the pace of the already instilled story.

So I guess I'll leave it up to everyone reading this. Should I slip in (* sorry. Bad choice of words, I suppose) the Patreon comics into the books or keep them out of the books all together? I'll let all of you comment your decisions.

There's no rush either. I'm still months away from finishing book 3, but I guess it's time to address it now.

What do you all think?

  1. I hope Steph is not a dispatcher at some transport company 🙂

And for me, go as hard as you wish in book. At least at my copy 😀

      Very well then 😉

  2. “I’ve seen you without your clothes on before. Never thought I’d see you naked.” Malcolm Reynolds, from episode “Trash”, FIREFLY

      Great quote!

    2. Fantastic TV show. A real shame it was run into the ground before ever getting a chance to go further.
Sadly, YoSafBridge was playing Mal the whole time and we never really got to know the real woman behind the scheming, but she made for a great antagonist. Stephanie is certainly playing a role, but I doubt she’s doing it for gain, more out of desperation and survival. Emrys owes her nothing, but he was a good influence.

  3. Wait, was she always that big up top? Just don’t remember her being that busty, then again, I also don’t remember anything about being in contact with ‘family’ so I’m thinking this is more of a ‘sugar’ daddy she’s talking to. Which isn’t the worst thing she could be doing with her time/body, even if it is kind of a more direct transactional relationship, some people are happy with that. (just hope we’ve not already met ‘daddy’ with regard to someone else in the comic)

    1. There’s a comic near the point of her breakup with Emrys where she sends him a nude selfie, and I can confirm that yes, she is that busty. I think this might only be the second time we see her totally naked, since the only time she has sex on panel (in the main comic) she’s wearing lingerie that covered her top half.

Also, as far as I know she has an okay relationship with her father. Her father’s friend was the one that molested her, not him, and she did tell Emrys that her father is a very successful businessman, so I assume he travels all the time. The way he calls her “sweetheart” (which is misspelled in the panel, BTW) notes a more fatherly love. Usually sugar daddies call their sugar babies “baby” or “babygirl.” Plus I think Steph is so loaded that she really doesn’t need a sugar daddy. Not to mention I don’t think she slept with anyone post-epiphany except for Dave, who she only used to get back at Emrys, which backfired spectacularly since he’s on the outs with the entire gang and Emrys couldn’t care less. (Why IS Dave still sleeping with Stephanie? I assumed she had dumped him after realizing how toxic he really is and the man she wanted to make jealous didn’t care.)

I can assure you that it’s her actual dad.

  4. I do not mind either way to be honest. I know some people may not like it though. Is it possible to have two versions, and we can choose when we purchase it, or is that too complicated? I do not really know how printing a book and all the accessory processes works.

I toyed with the idea of printing two different versions, but in the end, it would just cost too much. So I’m having to decide on how the one book is printed.

  5. Lots of famous artists have had secret sidelines in porn, going back to the Renaissance at least and probably further. I say you should put it all in the book – future historians will thank you 🙂

    1. Bohemiannightsthecomic

It does tend to be leaning that way.

  6. Well, looks like we’re getting a good insight into why she is the way she is.

    Abandonment issues. Daddy issues.

  7. Bohemiannightsthecomic

    Yup. Lots of issues.

  8. I missed out on the Kickstarter for book two, sadly, but I won’t make the same mistake for book three. As for the content Eric, I think you should trust your writer’s instincts and, if it does concern you having the more explicit scenes included, perhaps make a note in the forward of the book and in the campaign description.
On a personal note, I think you have already provided a valid explanation why you create the Patreon content that you want to include and why it is important to the story, but I can certainly say that I would have your same concerns were it my campaign. I suppose if the cost wasn’t too much, you could have a page prior to the explicit scenes that says, “skip to page # if you want to continue reading without the graphic scenes”. Accommodating your audience is a good thing and I applaud you for it, but at the end of the day you just have to make a choice and be satisfied with it. You’ve done a great job so far in my opinion, so I say have faith in yourself to make the right decision. 🙂

  9. Eric, you can “slip in” whatever you think is part of BN’s story line, that’s fine by me.
